Atkins Diet Food List (Phase 1)

Atkins starts with a strict Induction phase (Phase 1) at about 20 g of net carbs a day, then adds carbs back in stages. This list covers Phase 1, the strictest and most searched-for part of the plan. The later phases gradually reintroduce nuts, berries, legumes, and eventually some whole grains.

Atkins Phase 1 in short: protein, natural fats, cheese, and low-carb vegetables. Most of the day’s carbs come from vegetables.

Atkins and the glycemic index

Atkins limits how many carbs you eat, while low-GI eating focuses on which carbs. When you add carbs back in later Atkins phases, choosing low-GI options like berries, lentils, and steel-cut oats makes the transition smoother. See the low GI food list for ideas.

Frequently asked questions

How is Atkins different from keto?

Atkins Phase 1 looks a lot like keto. The difference is that Atkins is designed to add carbs back in stages, while keto stays very low long-term.

Can you eat cheese on Atkins Phase 1?

Yes. Hard cheeses have essentially no carbs. Softer cheeses like cottage cheese and ricotta have a few grams, so count those.
